How To Hire A Contractor

Here are some tips to hire a Licensed and Insured contractor to protect yourself from unscrupulous contractors that are out there:

  • Hire only a Licensed Contractor

  • Get Proof of Insurance.

  • Ask for a Certificate of the Contractor’s Insurance Company directly

  • Ask for references

  • BEWARE of those who knock on your door immediately following storms!  Many scammers mix in with the legitimate companies to take advantage of you in this situation.  These scammers are unlicensed and uninsured.  They will talk themselves up and make promises they have no intention of keeping because the only thing they are after is your insurance money.

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry licenses residential building contractors, remodelers, roofers, and manufactured home installers. The department requires certain standards of education and professional conduct be maintained to obtain and retain a license.

Licenses are required for all residential building contractors and residential remodelers who contract with a homeowner to construct or improve dwellings by offering more than one special skill.
